Unable to use up my annual leave entitlement

I started a month ago at my new job. My annual leave is given in hours as I do 4x 8 hours shifts and 1x7 hour shift (Tuesday) per week. So this is 39 hours a week.

The problem is that they have given me 76 hours annual leave to book off, 2 hours short of 2 full weeks and that's to the end of the annual leave 'year'. I submitted what days I would like to book off to HR dept (which added to 76 hours).

They could book all, but 14 hours. So, it looks I can book 2 days of 7 hour shifts off. No as there is only one Tuesday left which hasn't been fully allocated. I can book that day off no problems. I then have 7 hours left. I have asked my manager is it possible to work the extra hour on a Tuesday to make up a day's leave. They said no. I cannot 'cash in' the hours as there is the 'use it or lose it' policy regarding annual leave. I can use it too book off a partial day, but cannot split the hours into 2 - a 3 and a 4 for example. So this means, they expect me to attend work for an hour - which isn't worth
the hassle. If they gave me orginally 78 hours, I wouldn't be in this silly position.

The only other alternative, which is may be difficult is if someone leaves and has booked hours off on a Tuesday, I will be the first person to be asked do I want to book that day off?

I had similar problems in the past in my first year of various employers. They either let me do half days or get a few hours paid onto my salary.

I cannot change my days booked as 1. I have plans, 2. Probably got no alternative.

I am not part of any TU and need some advice please. I cannot afford to lose 7 hours of pay.

Have you asked if you can carry it over into the next leave year and take it at the earliest opportunity?

If you can demonstrate that you have made all reasonable effort to take the leave then I think this is a perfectly valid request.
That seems a lot of leave to have accrued already after only a months work

It is a lot of days off for only working a month. If it were me to be honest I'd let the 7 hours go - run for the hills with your fortnight!

Just to compare, if it were me at my firm as my holidays are 25 plus stats per year if I had worked a month I would have 2 and a bit days holiday to take. Usually the 'bit' part is disregarded.

Are your employers sure they know what they are doing?

Ask if they will pay you the equivalent but if not, let it go this year - you will at least know to book early next year.

That is a lot of annual leave, I agree!

Blimey, I wish I had your holiday entitlement!

The company holiday 'year' definitely runs from Jan to Dec right? I only ask because I worked somewhere where it was April to April, and that would make more sense in this case, but if the dates and amount of holiday days accrued is definitely right then I agree with SandC and Bestpud, it's a bit annoying but I'd write off the odd 8 hours and enjoy your two week break.

I assumed it was until the end of December as there would surely be a Tuesday 7 hour shift available to book off before end of March.
  • If the holiday year ended at financial year end (april) it would also explain the high holiday entitlement

I don't understand why you would be losing 7 hours of pay ? If it is paid holiday then surely you will get paid the samewhether you actually manage to take the hours or not ?
