Tax Rebate

I have never really looked at my tax before, but I received my P4H recently from a past employer and my partner was shocked to see what code I was on, so I was wondering if you could help me? My code is 498L and has been as far as I can remember for a few years now, I've worked in the bar/waiting on service for 3 years or so now, and so my wage has been minimum wage apart from 8 months where I was a supervisor at £6.71. This is the under 22 minimum wage. I understand that tips I receive get counted into my tax but not sure how they work it out.

My partner seems to believe I should be on a code beginning with 6.

Any help or advice would be appreciated I never really thought about tax before.

  • Give your employers tax office a call. They'll issue 603L and assess previous years.

It's probably just that your payroll department have not uprated your tax code each April.
