What size turkey?

Options
Hi everyone,

I'm doing Christmas dinner for the first time this year  for 4 people including myself. I was thinking of doing gammon and turkey.

I'd like to order from the local butchers but have no idea what size turkey and gammon joint to ask for _pale_ and scared they'll think I'm an idiot. I'm ok with measuring stuff out for recipes and the like but I couldn't tell you what a 2 kilo turkey looked like!

I'd like enough to feed everyone on Christmas dinner and a good lot for leftovers too...

Can anyone suggest a rough size? Also other people have been recommending a turkey crown only because of the relatively small amount I'll be using, do butchers actually do this or is it more of a thing only available in supermarkets?

Thank you :D

  • we are having a 12lb (5.5kg) turkey and a smallish joint of beef,
i just went into the butchers and told him how many people i am feeding and that i want a bit left over for boxing day and he suggested one, i am having a whole turkey but they are crowning it for me so i an bone the legs and stuff them with butchers sausages (skin off).

    i hope this helps
  • If you are wanting to order from your butchers you may want to get in there quick ours stops for orders tomorrow as do the two other butchers in town.

We always get a free range bronze turkey and the smallest size we can get it in from the butcher is 4kg. Our butcher always crowns it for us and we put the legs in the frezer to use up in the next few months.

If you have a look on brittshturkey.co.uk there is a how many people will me turkey feed section, also gives cooking times etc.

Yes , but the tradition , of the last eight years, we host the dinner, but my mother pays for the Turkey and the wine!

For those that would think ... wot a waste of money

    1) it does taste good
    2) its only once a year
    3) My Mother pays !

Also find out how much a meal out on Xmas day is!
  • Hi Noctu, Just noticed you are in Darlington. Bolams in Sedgefield have fresh crowns in, priced at about £5.50 per kg. Hope this helps.

  • our 12lb (5kg) turkey will be around £25 and it is free range, i have paid the butcher £45 and that will pay for my turkey, beef joint, streaky bacon, chipolata sausages and goose fat.

    hope this helps
  • We are having a 10lb fresh Turkey crown from our local butchers and that has cost us £34 + odd pence.

We had our first turkey crown last year and it was lovely. No wastage & Cuts down cooking time too and was so yummy.

This is for 2 adults and 3 children but then there is loads left over for tea, couple of curries and a buffet boxing day!

Wallbash - you don't have to justify your lovely humane choice.

And may I also suggest that in buying a free-range bird you want to encourage decent animal welfare practices and not practices that lead to birds crammed in sheds, under 23 hours of artificial light, with little room to move around, nothing to perch on, forced to sit in their own urine and faeces (and suffer burns on their feet and legs as a result) for most of their short lives, unable to develop strong enough bones to hold their massively ballooning weight (thanks to 23 hour feeding), with a high mortality rate (shall I go on ....??) Don't EVER feel that you have to justify not supporting these dreadful practices.

In the years when we couldn't afford a free-range turkey, we went without (or had a chicken instead).

I don't know how people can say words like "I'd never hurt an animal" and then use their spending power to support such a terrible system.
