  • Mashed veg, you could try cooking normal meals & puree them as you would for a baby.

My husband is in hospital at the moment and like yours has lost the ability to swallow although they are trying to teach him again, so I shall be watching the replies to this with great interest. I am quite concerned as to how I shall cope.

At the moment he takes a a few teaspoons by mouth but the food has to be completely smooth. Would pureed veg be smooth enough or would the fibres cause choking?

At the hospital they also give my husband special smoothies which contain added essential nutrients.

Would smooth yoghurts etc work for you, mousses etc. Macaroni cheese, rice puddings etcc could perhaps be blended to make them smoother, don't know how appetising they would be.

cauliflower cheese....or I make macaroni/cauliflower cheese combo sometimes. mince and veg with everything chopped very small/blended. You could make a batch for the freezer and blend to the required degree as he gets better, You can have the same then as well. Ditto bolognese

  • Hi

I had to have a nasal tube fitted last November for 2 weeks for weight gain as I couldnt keep much down.

I was told to eat soft high calorie foods in between meals but not to worry too much about veg and fruit as the feeds they were giving me through the tube had all the essential nutrients. I was also given Fortisip drinks to sip on.

One of the nurses told me that some veggies/fruit could cause added gas and tummy ache with the tube being in there.

we used the tins/jars of baby foods, gradually moving on to the toddler versions. a bit more costly but they do have a variety of breakfasts, lunch, suppers and puddings in just the right ammounts.

everyone seems to have good ideas, tried baby food but he says tastes of nothing. Have to get him off completely smooth food and onto what dietician
calls slightly textured. As he had lung cancer followed by a stroke its hard. but please keep ideas coming eggs are too obvious lol!

How about ready brek? Not being funny suggesting this, but it is finer than porridge.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.
  • Hi, sorry to hear that your hubby is unwell, it might be worth asking the speech therapist or dietician if they can give you some maxijule (which is like a glucose powder that you stir into drinks to give extra energy) and some thickener so you can make liquids up to the right consistency for him.

baby food in a jar is expensive rubbish consisting mainly of water in some of them, have you got a liquidiser? You could puree up whatever you are cooking that day.

Weetabix is good and nourishing with full fat milk and also porridge. Eggs are quite good if you can get the right consistency, maybe egg custard? Any veg cooked can be pureed, as can fruit.

Little and often is always better than huge portions and a tiny glass of sherry (thickened if necessary!) can work as an appetite stimulant.

Good luck, if all else fails, remeber that he will get his nutrients from the NG feed, anythiing else is a bonus.

Reday Brek is a good idea, but for a cheaper version just put normal porridge oats (dry) in the blender til they are as fine as baby food.

if you cook a meal and puree it - take a bit of extra time to puree things indiviually eg puree meat and gravy, puree carrots and puree potato and serve separatly (on the dish) and then your OH can eat as much of what he wants - dont puree it all together as he wont be able to savor the individual flavors. also its worth remebering that food puree is a lot smaller than a normal plate of food - work out the portions and then puree - you dont want to overwelm him with food he cant eat.
