If your employer hadn't overpaid you, you would have a £250 overdraft plus charges and you would be in a £286 deep financial hole. The bank can and will take the whole unauthorised overdraft out of your account all at once, they aren't obliged to let you pay it off in dribs and drabs. You are very lucky your employer has bailed you out temporarily.
Your employer did make a mistake but you have to take at least some responsibility for your bad financial planning. How about saying to your employer that you both made mistakes and offer to meet them half way? ie pay back half the overpayment immediately and the other half over a few months.
Start saving £20/month in your piggy bank so you don't get caught short next time the car tax comes around, and you won't get in this pickle again.0
