How about everybody get rid of their cars, and use public transport. Let the train take the strain.
Shall I just walk the 15 miles to the train station and go somewhere I don't want to go?

A moneysavingexpert would have a van or a large estate or even a hatchback. You couldn't get your tools for the allotment into a sports car and barely room for a bag of taters
And you couldn't collect big stuff from Freecycle.

I have a van for those exact reasons and a car because the family won't fit in the van (unless its illegally) :p

You can make love in a van.
If you did that in a Tesla, you might get an electric shock.
