Why is matched betting so complicated? Well its because we’ve all made the same assumption (or at least I think we have). You do exactly as the title suggests and match your bets. £10 on team A to win and £10 on team A to lose (logic says this is the same as Team B winning). That’s the point at which it all goes wrong, because that’s precisely what you don’t do, you aren’t placing 2 bets because that’s gambling.

The step I missed is that Betfair is an exchange where effectively you become the bookie. So you’re placing your bet (the gamble at the bookmakers) and your lay (where you are the bookmaker) on the same team in the same game and not the outcome of the match and when they say team A to win and team A to lose that’s precisely what they mean. To further complicate things you’re trying to match the end financial outcome rather than your initial expenditure so you really do need the spreadsheet or an incredibly good understanding of mathematics and a lot of patience.

Confused? I’m getting more so by the minute. Any comments, criticisms or outrageous thoughts welcomed. I’m going to figure this out even if it drives me insane in the process.

Yep that all sounds spot on to me (I've been matched betting for nearly 3 years). No need for you to go mad just yet ;)

If you have any questions though, I might be answer them here later today - or ask on the GIOL board where there are loads of helpful people.

:D That all sounds very technical to me, I think I'll stick to Ebay though may have to investigate the free scratchcards - I have sorted out a box to keep my money in- if it goes in the bank it'll disappear so I will be putting the equivalent of what I earn in my boX:D

Oh what to buy though!!!!

I'm going to start from Jan 1st too- off to USA in Fab so hope I can get bargains over there to boost my money:D

unless i read that betson thing wrong,it sounds like you have to bet again with the money that they give you back so you could still lose it all-just a word of warning!
