First Job - help and advice needed

Hey everyone. I am starting my first job in my life in February (well its a placement which is compulsory part of the degree). Employer promised to send out the paperwork around Christmas/New Year time.
Just wanted to generally find out the following:
1) What shall I expect before signing a contact? Are there anything that I should be aware of?
2) Is it by law that the employer must give me the role and responsbilities of my job in writing ?
3) Just a question about Income Tax. As this is my first job, I will not be charged Income Tax for the first £6,035, is this correct?
Sorry if questions do sound stupid, but I have never worked so will appreciate any information and advice given.
Thanks a bunch!

1) Just read what it tells you about the terms and conditions. There are minimum requirements for what it includes.
2) Within two months after your start of employment, your employer needs to have provided written particulars of your employment. These written particulars (which may be described as a contract) include a job title or a brief job description. This needs to be sufficient to give an idea of your place within the organisation. It does not have to be a full job description.
3) The current tax year began on 6 April 2008 and your personal tax allowance for the whole year is £6035. This is spread through the year so, if you have not done any paid work so far this year then if you begin on 6 February, you will already have accumulated a personal allowance of £5029. I would imagine that your pay will be below the tax threshold. You will be liable to pay National Insurance. There is no annual threshold for this: it is paid at the time you receive your pay.

LittleVoice, Big Thank You for your quick reply.
Just one question about the personal allowance.
So obviously from February until April I will earn less than £6035, do this mean that from 6th April 2009, I will have another £6035 of personal allowance?
Thank You again for the help.0 -
£6475 is the personal tax allowance for 2009-10 (£540/month)0

You start a new personal allowance on the 6th April every year. From the start of te new financial year, you won't get £6035 untaxed then start paying it from the time that runs out but instead will get a portion of your wage untaxed (personal allowance divided by 52) and then pay tax on the amount above that per week. In addition there is national insurance contributions.0
