Pavement Shopping Petition

I mentioned that they do this in Australia, and some said it was a good idea and how could we get it going in this country. So I started a petition, and never heard if it was accepted or not. Just discovered that it has been accepted, and five people have signed it! WOW!
Here is the link if you would like to take a look, and maybe sign?

Basically, pavement shopping is one day per month when you can put out your unwanted household items for others to take and use.
A bit like freecycle but you have to be walking past at the right time.
I know there will be arguments for and against it, but if you just want to get rid of stuff and don't care what happens to it then this may be a good way.

Even if this was only allowed twice a year it would be a brilliant idea. Think I read about it first in the Tightwad Gazette. Will definitely sign the petition.0

I mentioned that they have a Pavement Shopping day each month in Australia on the green board, and some thought it was a great idea and asked how we could get it going in this country. So I started an online petition, if anyone would like to take a look, and maybe sign it, the link is here.

For those who don’t know what a Pavement Shopping day is, it’s one day per month where you are allowed to put your unwanted household items out for anyone to take. Without getting hassle from the local council.
You put the items by your garden gate, or at the end of your drive, or anywhere people walking past can easily get at them. Everyone would know that items put out on that particular day are there because the owner does not want them and they are “free to a good home”.
This would save the time and expense of taking things to the tip, as well as helping others, and someone else reusing the item would be greener than it going to landfill.
You may even pick up useful items yourself too!
A sort of Freecycle without the web site.
I know people will say “dealers will take it and sell it”, but if you just want rid of it and don’t care who gets it, then what better way?0 -
Loved this idea when I was in OZ. Have signed the petition geordie joe.Away with the fairies.... Back soon0

Signed... They used to do something like this in Germany when I lived in Berlin as a kid...I think it was just that one day the binmen would take anything but it wasn't frowned upon if you say saw a clock or coffee table etc that you fancied...What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

I wouldn't have thought another of these 'Number 10 Petitions' would the the right place for this (has one ever succeeded anyway?).
Just ask your local councillor, I can see no reason why any council couldn't arrange it if they wanted to; it would even save them money!0 -
This is such a great idea! My dd and her family moved to Oz last year and they were able to get garden table and chairs, as well as a desk and outdoor play kit for dgd, all just for the collecting and this year they will be passing on some of their stuff.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

There's always one, and they always pick on me
If I sit here long enough I'm sure another BG will come along and pick on me for having two threads in this board :rolleyes:0
