You can order it via Tesco.com (via Quidco for cashback ;) ) and get it delivered to a Tesco store which has a Tesco Direct desk like Springhill, Bangor
  • Thanks for reply. Yes i have already done this using quidco and a £13 off vouucher code and got it all or 181 only problem what arrived at lisnagelvin was a small box with a phone number in to ring sky for instalation. I just want the physical box and because this on line is for new sky customers only they are just out to get new customers not help loyal ones. if you go online with sky you can get it installed for 159 plus 10 X 12 months HD contract only problem with this is waiting list until feb 09.

You can only get 'just the box' from eBay or the like, but you need to pay the £10 HD subscription surely, othewise you've just got a glorified Sky+ box?

According to DS there are actual boxes knocking about some Tescos. You don't have to take the £10 HD sub and you will get BBCHD and C4HD free but to get the recording facilities you will have to subscribe costing at least £17pm.

I would just get the FreesatHD box - no subscription and free recording along with BBCHD
  • so has anyone actually see a hd box in the flesh in any tescos in N. Ireland? hate to think of going down the ebay route but thats all thats left if we're to have hd for christmas!! Little help????????????

I wouldnt rush ... BBC HD is basically a preview channel and Channel 4 HD doesnt show much in HD. Sky Sports has precious little HD content and likewise with Sky1 HD.

I had Sky HD installed on 6th December and have just written to them to have it removed and the ontract cancelled as it is a waste of money.

HD is fantastic, there just isnt enough content and on Sky the sync between speech and picture is a joke. Maybe worthwhile if you have Sky Movies but they say in a recent letter that after March the full package with HD pack is going to cost £744 / annum !!!

Alledgedly the hd box will upscale all the channels to hd so the simpsons will look better on a hd telly without paying the £10 for the true hd channels.

Ah right, understood. Without the HD subscription, or the Sky+ subscription, you'll have a plain old sky box with temporary HD channels and upscaled HD and no recording facility. I think that ooo000ooo's post is maybe slightly (unintentionally) misleading. The Simpsons in the example is the same quality as normal SD. As in the Sky box receives roughly a 400 line picture, which gets output on a 1000ish line HDTV. The difference the Sky HD box would make is that IT would 'blow up' the picture to 1000ish lines and output over a HD cable, rather than the pic going through, for example, SCART, to the TV, at 400ish lines, THEN the TV 'blows up' the picture.
Technically then, there is less degredation with the HD box upscaling and sending over a less limited cable, but it cannot be called a HD picture. Recording a VHS onto a DVD doesn't make a DVD quality picture.
