You should carry on with him having that as his present, and he should be very grateful that you are willing to spend that kind of cash on him.
If he still doesn't want it then you should march him down to the nearest charity shop and make him hand it over to benefit people less fortunate than he is.
If you give into a kid over something like this then what do you think he's going to be like as a teenager?
As for Lego, they are well within their rights to stick to their terms & conditions, especially when there is nothing wrong with the item.
Sorry but I disagree here. We, as parents, tell our children that Father Christmas brings them presents, we should tell them that he has to know by a certain date, but we don't - so how do they know that they are not able to change their minds? The poor lad probably thinks he has given FC plenty of warning about what he wants!

Can you return it to a lego store in the uk? I know there is one at bluewater0

(i realise from the above the follow discussion may not be required, but should anyone else have a similar problem with Lego...)I would speak to Lego first (0800-5346-1111) and confirm that the goods need to be returned to Germany and whether they have a cheaper method of returning them.
If they don't, then I would point out that they are not complying with the Distance Selling Regulations, which requires the seller to make clear that if the goods are to be returned who pays for them. See section 3.55 here (pdf). The T&Cs on the Lego website do not make that clear.
And if still no-go, then Trading Standards.
I think you've made a very good point.
Their terms state:Cancellation Right
Under the Distance Selling Regulations, we grant full right of cancellation should you regret your purchase. Products in their original condition and quantity can be returned to us by post to the address given on your Returns Form, provided that this return is made within fourteen (14) days after receipt of the product. This does not apply to items personalised or made to your specification (LEGO Factory and Pick A Brick orders).
At no point is it suggested that would be anywhere other than the UK. Indeed their 'Contact Us' page provides an address in the UK, although adds "Please do not send product returns to this address. Refer to packing slip for correct address".
It does appear as if they are purposefully keeping the returns address as vague as possible (i would imagine a lot of customers would be put off at the prospects of having to return items to Germany). As Altarf points out there is a very legitimate argument that they are failing to fulfil their obligations in terms of the DSR, it's also a very underhand business practice and not something you'd expect from a company such as Lego.
It would be interesting to hear what they say about it, and/or whether they would ever arrange a collection of the item at the same cost as the original delivery charge (given they are in a better position to negotiate bulk rates with carriers).0 -
Just thought i would add that my 4 children are mad for lego and all the large construction set i have ordered from lego.co.uk have all been shipped from germany.
Surely it should be lego who pay the charges ,if i buy a product and lego.co.uk send it from germany then its their problem, it's like ordering a product from amazon then being told its made in china so send it back to china.
You should make trading standards aware of what they are doing even if you pay nothing as this seems to be a complete rip off.
come on Martin Lewis surely this is what you are all about, let people know that buying from lego.co.uk items may have to be returned to germany and the price involved :money: i bet one mention of this on one of your Tv shows and they would stop this fee.
P.S i had to send some things to my sister in Amsterdam and after pricing up postage it was cheaper to book a flight and take them myself so i had a mini break in Amsterdam, well worth remembering if you have family in europe.0 -

I agree with the above poster.
I have a nasty taste in my mouth from this experience. Lego know they have you over a barrel as they have control over supply of the product.. I had no option other than the website as this item was not available in any shop near us.
It reminds me of Legoland, they are very complacent as it is always packed whatever the service is like, costs a fortune to get in and then they bleed you for everything they can think of when you are in there. And the queues are horrendous.
I wont be returning the item now but will not buy anything else from the website0
