Help needed with Moorcroft debt recovery!!

I have just had a letter from moorcroft for an amount outstanding to british gas £201 this is from 2007. Firstly I am upset as when I moved out of the property it relates to I genuinly thought I had paid off both my gas and electric bills, but 6 months down the line british gas contacted me to say I had and outstanding amount of £268. On investigating it turned out I had made 2 payments but they both related to my electric and the gas one had'nt gone through. I maybe should have realised this but we relocated and when we sold the house paid out lots of things and so I had missed this. Firstly I am annoyed it took 6 months for them to notify me!! Is this usual? anyway I accepted it was my debt and payed £67 in August and set a direct debit up to pay the remaining over 4 months september came and went and no payment was taken I called and they said this would be set up but nothing happened I called again and again nothing happened!! I have now received the above letter and spoke to moorcroft this morning they came on very heavy handed and where insisting I pay a least half but we are not in a position to do this. Can anyone tell me if there is a minimum amount I have to pay, my husband is self employed and had no work for 3 months althought there is some work lined up for January but at the moment we are surving on my wage alone, we do have other debts and we are managing those and have agreements in place but I have to say moorcroft did'nt seem to want to help at all and I really dont know our rights. Any advise would be greatly recieved.

I would be oinclined to put in a formal complaint to BG and demand that they take the debt back and give you time to pay, say 10% per month. It is there incompetence that is the problem not your willingness to pay.
Actually, think they should reduce the debt to compensate you.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
