My television has this lost its picture when it was turned on this evening. Its not plasma or LCD or anything, but was a very good philips model at the time.
The sound is fine, but all we get is a grey screen with a kind of multiple z shaped white lines down the screen ( slightly longer at the top and bottom of the screen than the middle).
Tried switching it off for a while, connections etc.
I know this is a long shot but, is it possible to tell from the brief description what it is likely to be - tube etc.
Ah well, just have to spend more time on here.

Over time a pattern of predictable faults becomes apparent to a particular make and model. Quote your model number and you might give enough information for someone else to help you, perhaps by refering to the models service manual. The cost of on site repairs/servicing may be prohibitive.

Doesn't sound like the tube, but also doesn't sound like a DIY job. If you are able to have a go try these guys to see if your set is listed , best of luck.0

Don't be tempted to take the back off and poke around yourself unless you know what you are doing. There are very high voltages in the back of a television which may still be present even after disconnecting from the mains."...IT'S FRUITY!"0

Thanks for the replies.
The model is a Philips 29PT828C/05
I'll have a look at that link also0 -
Hi there,
Seems to me it is a fundamental fault with the scanning circuits, the tube itself probably remains ok.
Could be a cheap repair but you still have to pay around 40quid to get someone to look at it.
If the TV is over 5yrs old I would not bother with the repair and simply buy another TV. The CRT models are cheap at the moment with a 28" CRT from phillips 28PW6520 28" TV at 240quid from COMET.
I am sure you could get a deal 10-20% cheaper than this by using vouchers, cashback, other shopbots or tips in this website.
Hope this helps put you in the picture!!!

PS At least with a new purchase you will have a new model with at least 12mths warranty. The designed/intended lifetime of electronic components range from 5-10yrs.
PPS If you are feeling brave you can always check the all fuses you can find in your TV and see if they are intact as it only costs pennies to replace. Burn marks on components is another sign!!! REMEMBER THOUGH THE TV IS A VERY HIGH VOLTAGE DEVICE AND YOU SHOULD REALLY ALWAYS LET A PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER DO ANY REPAIRSGrocery Challenge 2008
