Wife likely to be made redundant tomorrow.

My wife has been told she is likely to be made redundant tomorrow and we just need some questions answering.

She has worked there for 8 years so we have worked out her statatory redundancy payment will be about £2600 - will she get 4 weeks notice pay ontop of this? she normally gets paid on the 15th every month (2 weeks in advance and 2 weeks in arrears).

She went back to work in September 2007 after having 6 months off maternity leave will this affect her payment? Will she be entitled to Contribution-based Jobseeker's Allowance? her salary now is £24,000 so beleive she has paid enough NI. We are worried because obviously she wasn't paying NI while getting statatory maternity pay. I am working so wouldnt be entitled to any other benefits my wage is £30,000.

Thanks in advance.

Forgot to add - they were only told about the redundancy yesterday so no consoltation period - she works for a major major large blue chip company that are not going bust.

Yes to all the above. Her NI would be up to date and even if not credited whilst on maternity leave, she'd only be short 1 month in the two years used to calculate entitlement.

Great thanks - when can she start claiming JSA? would she need to do it now or would she have to wait for her 4 weeks notice period to finish?

If she finishes work tomorrow, she should be able to claim straightaway - she needs to make an appointment at the local jobcentre.

You can't claim for any period that is covered by notice pay so she can start claiming from the date that runs out. Has she been told she will leave immediately if made redundant though? As she may be asked to work the notice period as many companies do (to enable a hand-over or tie up loose ends etc).

She should make a claim for JSA immediately she is unemployed, don't worry about the Payment in lieu of notice they will take this into account, the Jobcentre is so overwhelmed at the moment that they'll probably need that time to get the claim up and running, that way when she is due money after the four weeks she'll get it on time.

Thanks - we will definately do this - hopefully she will have a new job before the end of the notice period so it wont be needed but its nice to know its there just incase - We looked over our finances last night and did some number crunching with the JSA and redundancy pay along with our savings we should be alright aslong as she can get a job within 6 months.

    Fingers crossed.
