in Cutting tax
Hello, I'm a student moneysaver and have been lurking on this forum for a while now but have kept my head down because I haven't really had any problems, but for this I am just a bit stuck!
I'm well aware that the deadline for the paper form of tax rebates has passed but we have until January to do it online I think?
I'm in the process of doing it online through the tax website but I come to a bit where I need a UTR or something similar reference number where its only written on any previous tax forms. I've never applied for a tax rebate before and so don't understand what I'm supposed to do because it says its compulsory.
I don't really understand income tax and national insurance as it is but people have told me that I should apply for one because I've been overtaxed. Can anyone give me any advice on what to do or anywhere else I can find this reference number?
I also want to assess previous tax years incase I've been overtaxed there aswell but I'm a bit disorganised with this stuff and so not sure if I have all the required documents? (Mainly due to moving to and from opposite ends of the country all the time!)

You are attempting to do a self assessment which only applies if you are a higher rate taxpayer, self employed or have income from property or other untaxed income.
If you have just been a PAYE employee and believe you have overpaid tax, you just need to write to your tax office setting out the years involved and asking them to look into it for you.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Hi
I've just become a full time student as well and am in the process of claiming my tax back. I phoned my tax office and they asked me to send a P50 form that you can download on the hmrc website, and part 2 and 3 of my p45 with a covering letter.
It's as easy as that. I was also told that if I wanted them to check previous years I should send any of my other P45's and P60's.
The self assessment you were talking about is for people that are self employed. There is no cut off date for you to claim back taxes, i think you have about 6 years to do it.
Hope that helps!0
