Credit card charge - can I do anything?

I changed bank accounts a couple of months ago, and I rang Barclaycard to change my DD. Apparently, as I had rung furing the payment cycle of my card I had to call another time (?!). I told them I would cancel at my bank as well.

In the meantime, I cancelled my DD at my bank and I paid the minimum payment on the 22nd Dec. I rang again to set up a new DD and again they said I couldn't due to this payment cycle thing. I explained again, I had cancelled by DD at my bank and they said they were in the process of taking the payment (which obviously wouldn't happen).

I decided I'd wait until my statement arrived, which it did dated 23rd Dec. Payment went through on the 22nd Dec, no charge there so I thought great.

I've just received a letter dated 6th Jan, saying that because the latest DD installment wasn't paid, and the payment was not received by the due date I'm being charged £24. I find it difficult calling them when they're open, as I leave the house at 6am and don't get back until 9pm and most days I don't even get a lunch hour.

Is there anything I can do? I tried twice to get it sorted over the phone. I realise I was 2 days late on payment at the bank, but 2 days for £24!! I only owe them £400!!

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • It’s hard enough remembering my opinions - without remembering my reasons for them
  • Thanks for the thread link. I have been trying to find that for ages!! It'll be useful for some other letters I want to write.

I rang them up and ranted a little over the phone, and I took a breath and they inturrupted and said 'no problem, I'll refund the charge to your account now, it should appear on your next statement'.

    Brilliant! :T

Thanks to MSE I'm really taking notice of things like this. Before I would have just accepted it (my debt makes me feel quite shameful), but now I feel I can fight my corner on things.

    Thank you.
