Credit Agreement Advice

Hi,
I could really do with some advice. I have a credit agreement with a company called Open & Direct set up though the Land of Leather for a suite at £919. Apparently I have missed the payment deadline for making full payment and am no looking at a bill for £1753 after just one year. I have missed the payment by less than a week and am being chanrged a full years interest.
My main concern is that I was phoning the company up today to find out when my full payment should be made as I have had the money for about 11 months to pay if off. I was expecting a letter to inform me what the money was due to be paid. Open and Direct have since told me that they dont send out reminder and its the customers responsibility to pay it. I asked the customer service bloke if this was the companies way of extorting more money out of people and he just said he did not know how the company operates - didnt even try to deny it!!!!! There was apparenly no supervisor or manager available to take my call and im phoning back this afternoon to speak to Shona.
Does anyone have any suggested course of action as im really not wanting to pay extortion money for less than a week late and no reminder letter sent.
Thanks.
