Costco free box of Gift wrapped belgian chocs with membership renewal

I just went to renew my Costco membership at CS and was told if I did it at the till with my shopping I'd get a free box of Chocs. The chocolates are Kirkland Signature belgian chocs nicely wrapped. I didn't see the offer advertised anywhere so don't know how ling its on for or if its in all stores but I presume it is. Not sure if you can renew your memebership now even if it isn't due yet to get the free chocs - obviously only worth doing if you get the extra months added onto your membership and you were planning renew anyway.
