Contractors and Bereavement Allowances

My mum passed away recently, and my brother took a week off work because he couldnt face going in.

He has now been told as a contractor he's not entitled to any pay for the week he was off.

Could anyone confirm if this is correct?

TIA

As an employee he wouldn't be entitled to paid time off and a contractor has even fewer rights as he is effectively self employed.

Yes, unfortunately it probably is correct.

As was said above, you are not entitled to paid time off work even if you are a full time employee, but the majority of employers allow some compassionate leave, usually up to a week (but I know in my experience many people need longer and get a sick note from their doctor).

It would be very unusual to get as much as a week, even for a close relative; 3 days is far more normal.

    Our place is a week.

Although anyone I've known since I've been here has had at least 3/4 on a sick note for a parent or suchlike passing away.

sorry i should have said this before but i am sorry you lost your mum.
One of the saddest days of my life when i lost mine. Lost her 28 years ago and still shed a tear for her every now and again.. Just like now when i see a post like yours.
