Allied International Credit

Hello all, I am new here and have found you after researching Allied International Credit and would be grateful for any help and advice.
Last night I received a yellow card from AIC (no letter) which said that I owed them £6,500 and that I must pay in full immediately. Not knowing what this was as I have never had any credit apart from my bank account I called them today and spoke to a very rude man. He said that the loan was in relation to a car loan from 2002 (I have a very old second hand car that I brought for cash 4 years ago) and that I must pay immediately or be taken to court. I told him that this couldn't be my debt to which he called me a liar, said I was trying to get out of the debt and he would see me in court.
The only thing I can think as he said was it was from 2002 is that I was in a very abusive relationship which ended in 2002. He ran up quite a few debts on our address at the time but as far as I was aware they were all in his name. I have never had anything from any company asking for money before so I am confussed that this loan is from 2002 and it has only just come to light.
I really dont know what to do and I am terrified that I am going to have to pay a debt that doesn't belong to me. Do I write to AIC and ask for proof of the debt.
Sorry for the long post, if any of you can help I would be most grateful.
Many thanks

i think this debt would be statute barred as it is over 6 years old
am sure someone with a bit more experience and use will come along shortly just wanted to say that you should only deal with them via mail and when you write make sure you include "I DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THIS DEBT" at the top0 -
HI , If you did not put your name to a agreement they can do nothing . Write and just say you do not acknowledge any debt to their company . Request that they contact their client to check their details . This letter is aim to put you in a panic ,in the hope you will send them some money . Please do not sign the letter only print , I would only use their referance number . And please NEVER SPECK TO THEM ON THE PHONE , IF THEY RING YOU PUT PHONE DOWN .0

What you need to do is let sleeping dogs lie. Do not acknowledge any other correspondence unless they start court action.
If you ex obtained debt in joint names (not unheard of on here at all), then a debt arranged in 2002 and the last payment or written acknowledgement was over 6 years ago (5 in Scotland) , then the debt is statute barred.
This means that the court and the law consider it unfair for the creditor to do more than ask you nicely if you want to pay. They cannot enforce the debts or chase you through the courts..
Since you have no idea of the timescale on this it would be better to keep away from the whole thing as long as possible.
IF your ex paid more recently and the debt is on jjoint names, then you will need to demand the CCa to see if you did sign for it, but I would recommend keeping that until, the start any court action.
Do you knwo if anything shows up on your credit record? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

At this stage, I would have advised you not to even phone AIC today, but given that you have, I would aviod any further contact for as ong as possible. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thank you everyone you are all helping to make me feel a bit better.
I have no idea if anything is on my credit file as I have never had a reason to check it before. I rent a private property and I never had a problem getting that and credit checks were done, I will check tonight when I get home.
Having read some other posts statute barred means the debt is no longer enforceable anyway is that correct?? Does that mean they cant take me to court??
Sorry more questions0 -
It means they can threaten to take you to court but if they issue court papers, your defence is that the debt is statute barred and the whole thing grinds to a halt. It is not unknown for DCas to try it on, hoping you do not know the law.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

I have looked at my credit file and nothing is on there. What would be the best thing to do now, shall I write to them telling them I dont know what this debt is and ask for proof?0
