BR Tax Codes and Students

My student daughter has just paid tax on a "BR" Tax code although she doesn't earn that much from a part time job working in a pub a couple of times a week. Can she get a refund and if so, how? Thanks

That is just so 'odd'. My student son just came off the phone with the inland revenue, who refused to be of any help at all, they just said to him, are you paying on a BR tax code, if so talk to your employer get them to contact us! They then put the phone down on him!

if its your daughters only job then she should be on 603L.... did she give her employer a P45 or did she fill in a P46?

You need to understand that it is up to your employer to put you on the correct code number. If you dont have a P45, then you must ask your employer for a form P46. If you sign this to say its your only job, then he operates code 603L (Emergency code) and you contact HMRC to get it put on the cumulative basis. Sadly, some employers are disorganised/not sure what they should do, so the whole thing messes up - and then they wonder why people leave as they think they are paying too much tax!

  • To answer your question,

Your son will need to speak to the tax office that deal with his employer. He can get their phone number from them, probably whoever does the wages.

They'll check to see if there is any information needed to put him onto a 603L tax code - this is the standard tax code.

He may need to have his employer PAYE reference number when he calls - he can get this from the person who does the wages too.
