What kind of fabric (cashmere apart) should I be looking for on the labels of dressing gowns if I want to buy a really warm and cosy one?

I have a fleecy one which is good. The one thing I'd say though is to think about what you'll wear it for. Mine is great for snuggling up on the sofa but less good if I'm rinsing off a few dishes before bed - the sleeves are very long and wide and dip in the water. It's also slightly too long so if I'm carrying stuff up the stairs (although I see you're a man and probably less likely to do this  unless you're very different from DH) it trips me up. Just some practical considerations which might help.0

I got a very fluffy one from Primark last year (£8) which I can only wear when its really cold - otherwise I get far too hot. Would definitely recommend0

If you look in charity shops, you can sometimes buy old blankets for around £3. I imagine the thick felt-type ones could easily be converted into a dressing gown.0

I've got my mothers old one - thermal material from Damart and it is really light but toasty. No idea if they still do it or how much it would cost though (my mother died 12 years ago  so it's lasted really well)Aiming for a Champagne Lifestyle on a Lemonade Budget

To me there can no longer be any substitute to soft, warm fleece. I bought one last year in the M&S Sales (used a Xmas present voucher for it), and I wouldn't want a different one now. It just feels so warm and cosy... :ABe careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0

Another vote for fleece - nothing's warmer, and its light weight is less restrictive so you don't feel too wrapped-up. Roll up the sleeves if they dangle in dishwater! The only thing to watch out for is static - pretty much inevitable with synthetic fibres.
I might be tempted to make myself a big fleece babygro!0
