How long should a sofa be expected

to last for? I bought one for £1300 from John Lewis and it started to fall apart after 2 years. They've basically said 'Tough luck, we're not going to do anything about it.' Always shopped there because of their reputation for after sales service, but the first time I've had a complaint, I've been disappointed with their attitude. Am I being unreasonable?

Hi IMO it depends. Is it just a sofa or a whole suite for £1,300? What is the damage? Is it truly falling apart or just one minor flaw?0

the middle has collapsed. I might need to lay off the burgers.0

Well unless you are very large then yes it should last longer than 2 years.0

Ask to see the manager and then if you have no luck there let them know you are going to mention it to trading standards and/or watchdog, one of the most prestigious department stores in the UK cannot afford to have such bad publicity.
Basically they are fobbing you off thinking you will just go away, a sofa is generally guaranteed for 5+ years and if it broke apart in just 2 then there is something wrong with the manufacture, it matters not your size IMO.
It matters not if you are reponsible for the breakdown really, if you argue loud enough yet give a firm, consise argument yet dont screech (this brings security which is never good) superstores will usually give in just to get rid of you as soon as possible lol
EDIT: Make sure also that you go looking like you EXPECT satisfation and you look the part, no offense meant but if you look like you just won a TV part in the return of Harry Enfields "The Slobs" you will get nowhere as fast as like looking like a duke
The trouble is nowadays is that everyone is content to pay the price demanded and not kick up a fuss...if you refuse to take no for an answer you will get further."Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck" - The Doctor.0 -

An iitem is expected to last a reasonable time. there is no law as to what a reasonable time is. but a sofa is expected to last approx 3-5 years. It makes no differende if it is outwith the 12months guarantee the drability of goods is what matters, Your statutory have been breached as it is not of satisfactory quality and it may not of been of satisfactory quality when purchased if there is a major fauly within 3-5 years. Also it is not fit for the purpose it was bought for. If you tell them the sale of goods act 1979
The goods should last the length of time that a reasonable person would expect for goods of that nature. If the goods stop working properly within this period of time, it may be evidence that they were not of satisfactory quality when the client bought them and that her/his statutory consumer rights have been breached0
