Washing a kids proofed nylon jacket

Does anyone know what washing powder to use when washing a jacket which needs to reproofed after washing. I have a Kag in a bag for my two and they both need washing. The store I bought the jackets in recommended some Nikwash or something, some kind of liquid wash which was £5 a bottle. Can anyone recommend a washing powder that I can use instead to wash them with. Have the proofing stuff to spray them once dried. Thanks for any info. Appreciate it.

You could use lux: very gentle and detergent free apparently. I usually use the nikwax but that's because I always do their quiz and have pots of the stuff hanging about; pretty pricey to buy.
    Link to the quiz:

it's for footwear cleaning gel at the mo though!

Any home kits, drying cleaning, proofing etc are not as good as getting the professionals to do it.

Your best taking it to a Dry Cleaners, getting them to wash it (not dry clean) and reproof it. Dont go for any fancy wash, just let them do it. Then if it goes wrong, they are at fault.

the problem with washing powder is that it makes the garment soak up water to wash it. You don't want a waterproof coat to soak up water.

The special nikwax stuff doesn't make it coak up water, but can clean it..

If it's just a mac in a pac, then either handwash it (without powder) or stick it in the washer without detergent.

If you don't want to fork out for the proper stuff, just don't use soap powder/detergent.

I was in an outdoors shop and overheard the staff explaining to a woman how she had just de-waterproofed her £200 gore-tex jacket for good by washing it with persil......

Thanks for all the quick, informative replies everyone, brilliant. I'll have a look at the Nikwax site to see what's on there. I might try washing the jacket without soap, I'll maybe Google and see what there is when I get a chance. I really appreciate all the info, thank you. :-)
