How long is a cheque valid for?

Does anyone know if a cheque is only valid for 6 months from the date it's written? Thanks.

That is the rule most banks apply, though there is no legal limit except the statute of limitations
  • I paid one in the other day that was about 7 months old, no query from the bank and it was paid.

They don't always look too closely at the date. Had it been pointed out to them they might have refused it.

I work in finance and it's usually six months...
  • I've read that usually it's six months but at the bank's discretion it can be longer, and that a cheque is actual "live" for six years (as in proof of debt). Guess it might be worth phoning the bank and finding out. Thanks.

We've been told at work by the bank that the 6 months rule no longer applies - they might query it after 6 months to ensure it hasn't been reissued but it is still valid. Caused us a nightmare as we used to deem all cheques over 6 months old invalid and reissue them - now we have to manually stop them all and then reissue them!

That's useful to know, thanks WestonDave. My boss has a rent cheque for quite a large sum which was refused and stamped "Refer to Drawer". He wants to try and re-present it, but it's dated 1st June.

I recently had a cheque returned by HSBC as it was alledgedly 'out of date' and I was told to return it to the issuer and have a new one drawn instead. The cheque was approx 8 months old when I presented it. Luckily I was able to with very little fuss.

I assume I was just unlucky that someone noticed the date.

  • The tenant has done a runner owing thousands in rent. I doubt he'll be willing to supply a new cheque...

In that case I would suspect that even if youcould force the bank to accept the cheque it will still bounce anyway when it reaches the recipient account.

Sorry I can't suggest anything helpful here.
