there is an allowance before which you don't pay tax - when you reach that amount and earn more than that allowance you will start paying tax - have a look at the customs and revenue website to see the allowance

Basically covered, I think, at post #4 on the last thread you started about your tax?

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=16299473#post16299473

The code 609 translate to £6090 you can earn in a year before deduction of any tax. As you say you earn well under that ... then no tax to pay. Previously it appeared you were on Code BR or similar ... that's obviously sorted out.

So no tax ... and no reason to confuse us all by opening a new thread! :p

  • Hey rather than making a new thread I thought I might post here since it's related.

Ok, im currently in part-time employment, earning less than £5k a year. Yet I am still getting PAYE tax deducted on top of NI. I thought I have sent off forms to stop this but nothing has seem to changed.

Basically, What do I need to do to stop getting PAYE deducted, and what do I need to do to get my previously paid PAYE back? (also owed tax from previous job)

    What is your tax code?

Have you given in a P45 or filled in a P46?

    My Tax code is BR.

Im pretty sure my previous employer sent out my P46. Also, when I left their employment, they gave me my P45 and I gave that to my current employer.

but what does the NI cat mean?

This shows which NI table is used for your NI contributions, table A is full rate NI and you are not in a contracted out pension scheme. This means that if you earn over £105 a week you will pay 11% on those earnings over £105.
If you have a look at page three of
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/nitables/ca38.pdf
there is a flow chart for deciding which NI table to use.

Unless this a 2nd job you should not be on the BR code. This means that you are paying 20% tax on all your earnings and receiving no tax-free allowances. Normal tax code is 603L.
Im pretty sure my previous employer sent out my P46.

They would not have. A P46 is something a new employer gives you when you join them without a P45.
Also, when I left their employment, they gave me my P45 and I gave that to my current employer.

I suggest you speak to your employer and see what happened with your P45. If they say that they sent it on to HMRC you should give them a ring and get them to sort your code.

Ok, will do thanks. If I needed to contact HMRC, do you know where I would get the number?

    You need the Employer reference number from your payslip. Enter it here;

    http://search3.openobjects.com/kbroker/hmrc/locator/locator.jsp?type=1

and it will give you the correct office to contact.
