The only way to stop them ..... is to talk to them. Stick your head in the sand .... and they will continue and consequently ratchet up the costs.
They're under instruction from the Govt to deal sympathetically with businesses affected by the recession ... but can't help you if you try to ignore them. Get in touch with the office you've had the letter from ...... as in tomorrow! They will accept an offer .. but make it one you can stick to. The more money up front the better (and the lower the interest)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I'm not an expert on HMRC's penalty system but they would be willing to help, especially given the current economic climate. By not phoning them to work things out you are probably making things worse for your self. For every day you go overdue, HMRC add daily interest to the amount due. At certain points they will also add penalties (£100, £200 etc) and surcharges (5% of the amount due at first i believe).
The amount owed will keep going up and up and at some point they may take you to court and could declare you bankrupt.0 -
It would help to read this first ..... but do contact the local office who've been in touch :-

...... and do bear in mind that HMRC are under instruction to be more helpful than usual (shades of Foot and Mouth .... which was a time of another Govt order to be accommodating to people in financial difficulty)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
