Proof of outgoings???

Hi guys, does anyone know if you have to provide proof to the OR for things like rent, council tax, utilities etc etc??

Thanks

  • The OR has a general idea of what each thing costs IF something is too high or looks a little suspicous they'll question...otherwise they usually take what you say on trust

  • Ok thanks for that. Anybody else got any opinions/thoughts??

    With Phil.

They tend not to ask. But if it looks odd (like a £200 a month gas bill for a 2-bed flat for example), then they would question it. They ask you for your rental agreement and the rent would be on that. They can also check council tax via your local councils websites etc.

If though, it went to IPA and you disputed it (considerably - most ORs would negotiate), then yes you would have to provide proof of your outgoings.
  • The problem i have is providing a rental agreement as im currently just living in a friends house, where i pay rent etc. Would i have to prove this?? My name is on the council tax bill if that helps. Sorry for all the questions, just want everything to be above board!!
  • Hi LeedsLass....you had your day in court yet??

I ask coz I'm in Leeds too (30th Dec in court)

Good luck with your Big Dance (BR)
  • No, not got a court date, havent really even started the ball rolling as yet!! I dont want to get there to get asked for something i cant provide!! :o
  • You're doing right getting as prepared as you possibly can.

I'll post up a report of my day in court when I've had it then you can maybe get an insight of how it goes down in Leeds.

In this case, with a lack of tenancy contract, the OR will either take your word for it or write to the person you live with and pay and ask them.

If you wanted to, you can get tenancy agreements from WH Smith cheaply, or online for free - try the rentals board here and search for one. There must be a copy there or a link etc. Then sort out the agreement between yourself and your friend then you would have a copy to send to the OR.
  • Thanks Slay, that would be great. And thanks skylight, thats very helpful!!
