Boxing day-day off?

Can anyone help?
I work for a high street store. When there is a bank holiday and i dont work it, i get the BH off and also my day off, which is a tuesday.
I have just been told that Christmas week i am off Christmas day and boxing day, with boxing day being my day off for the week. Surely they cant change the rules for one BH?
As far as i am concerned, i am entitled to my day off, christmas day and boxing day (as i am not needed for work). Am i right? I cant see how they can change the rules to suit them.
Other colleagues are in the same boat and we feel we are being taken advantage off.

what does your contract say about holiday entitlement and hours of work?Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
In my work we can choose either to have public hols as part of our annual leave, or to take them as they fall. If you work part time and choose the first then you receive public hols pro rata to your working hours, if you choose B you just get the pub hols which fall on a day you work.
So e.g. if I was on option B, and in your situation, I would only get the monday off as a pub hol and would not get the Tues as I'd be off anyway.
Check what it says in your contract re pub hols0 -
It says bank holidays to be worked if needed, they dont so i am off.
As i pointed out, when there is a bank holiday i work a 4 day week.
Christmas week there are 2 so we feel it should be a 3 day week, or at least carry over a day off but they are having none of it.0 -
Bank holidays do not form part of our annual leave entitlement.0

do you normally work on a friday?
if not, then you wont get an additional days holiday in lieu of the b/h. However, you should get a pro-rata rate, for the boxing day (if the f/t staff are being paid for this day, or getting an additional day in lieu)

If you work a 4 day week (i.e. not fulltime) why should you be entitled to all the public holidays?0

I work a 5 day week, 4 days when there is a bank holiday i dont work. The post is NOT about wanting all BH off.
As stated, my day off (tuesday) is being changed to boxing day.
When BH is a monday my day off is not changed to that, so why should it be changed to boxing day?
I am full time.0 -
there are 2 issues I think
a) working Bh - I am assuming you don't want to work it? But this could be a very busy day in retail so they may actually require you to work it - so this would fall under the "if needed" clause and they can require you to work it
and
b) overall holiday entitlement. If you are entitled to eg 20 days hols a year PLUS 8 days for BHs, then it's 28 days total. 7 normal BHs + your 20 days = 27. Are are they giving you an extra day in lieu? i.e. 7 BH plus 21 days?
This is why we need to know the exact wording of your contract.Debt free 4th April 2007.

A) Its not about not wanting to work it. I have been told i am off and its my day off for the wee, which is always tuesday.
I have not been offered a day in lieu. I have been told thats the way it is.
My handbook states, Customary holidays-you will be entitled to time off equivalent to one fifth of your normal working week in respect of each day of customary holiday which falls in any week whether or not it is a day on which you are contracted to work.0 -
so you should get an extra day off at another time according to your contract, which is what I'd be asking HR about?Debt free 4th April 2007.
