It pays to shop around - Even in the same store!

For those of you who are preparing to bake for Christmas, it certainly pays to shop around when buying ingredients - even in the same store.

This morning, in my local Tesco, a 100g Packet of Tesco Walnut Halves in the Bakery Section were £1.48. Two aisles back, in the "Whole Foods" Section, a 250g Packet of Tesco Whole Foods Walnut Halves were £1.43. So you get two and a half times as many Walnuts and save 5p! It's Nuts!

A similar saving (but not quite as large). 500g of Tesco Ready to Eat Apricots in the Bakery Aisle £1.88. 500g of Tesco Ready to Eat Apricots in the Whole Foods Aisle £1.78. And actually, the Whole Foods ones are nicer!

I am sure there are plenty of examples where you can get the same products cheaper in other stores, my point here is shop around, even in the same store!

  • That's funny because brazils tend to be cheaper in the baking section than the wholefoods, so I'd stopped looking in the wholefood section. The mind boggles

I've noticed this too. Ridiculous! It's the same with Naan bread - fresh are often half the price than the pre-packed stuff or the chiller cabinet ones

Isnt that because the prepacked/chiller tend to last longer?
  • same with dried banana chips in tesco cant remember exact prices but in dried fruit section by fruit and veg 2 100g bags are the same price as 1 300g bag in the whole foods section!!!

we only buy the dried banana chips with nothing added for our rabbits so cant get the ones in baking aisle as they have coconut oil or sugar added

Not when you put the fresh ones in your fridge!

Yup, there's all sorts of duplicate products around Tesco. I buy all my coconut milk in the World Foods (Caribbean) section, because it's like 45p, compared to the 97p of Blue Dragon!! Also, buying salsa in the crisps aisles is far cheaper than the salsa they sell in the Mexican food section (even though both are Tesco brand). Really stupid sometimes.

Yes it is, because fresh has a legally shorter shelf life it has to cheaper in an attempt to sell it faster, whereas the longer life version isn't so desperate to sell, hence will be higher priced...you are paying for the extra shelf life really, and it does cost marginally more to give it that longer shelf life on a production level.
