Cheap Wire transfers

Hi all,
maybe one of you savvy folk can suggest something for me:
I regularly have to send money from the US into a bank account in England, I am charged $45 for the pleasure regardless of the amount I send. I feel there has to be a better way. Before anyone suggests Western Union they do not wire direct into bank accounts. I can't be the only person in the US doing this regularly? What about all those poorly US students studying in the UK? I refuse to believe the only option is via my bank in the US!! I've looked online and paypal, etc all need email addresses. I simply need to sendmoney direct into an English bank acount: at this end I can pay a multitude of ways, in cash, with card, whatever it takes. It's how it ends up in the UK that is harder to figure out without going direct through my bank.
Curious to see if anyone has some suggestions...
