Claiming back tax - Which TAX Office?

in Cutting tax
Hello,
Due to a massive palava with my P45 and ex employer I am oweed about £240 in back tax from when I was on emergency Tax.
The problem is that I am having trouble finding which tax office to contact and how to proceed. Do I need to contact my local tax office or my employers tax office? Also how do I find out the details of them (although I am guessing that I can find the latter by phoning my previous employer)?
Do I need to phone them or do I need to write a letter with photocopies or originals of my payslips??
Sorry if they are stupid questions but everyone seems to be giving me different answers
TIA :money:

You will probably have to send stuff in. To find out what office, ring any tax office and ask where you should send stuff. Just look up Inland Revenue, or HM Revenue & Customs in the phone book and ring the number, or pick one from http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/local/individuals/index.htm
When you give them your national insurance number, they will be able to check where your records are held, and give you the appropriate contact details.0 -
Thanks CTM

your tax records will be held at the tax office of your last employer, also if it is for the current year you will need to get a form P50 and send in P45 with it if you are not working or claiming any benefits at present, if for a previous tax year, you will need to send any P45's and P60's you have, and just put covering note on for them to review your records, but you will need to send in the originals,0
