Honeymoon tips

Hi everyone,

I'm finally getting round to booking various parts of my honeymoon and thought it would be a good idea to have a thread about honeymoons and related money saving!

So, where is everyone going on honeymoon and does anyone have any good money saving tips that others could benefit from?

Also does anyone have any tips or experience for getting any sort of special treatment - upgrades etc? Do places and airlines tend to do this or is it a complete myth?

We're going to Australia for 4 weeks, H2B has an aunt and uncle in Brisbane so we will be spending some time there, are going to find a nice island to go to for a week, and then have a week in Melbourne and go to the grand prix. I am trying to think of places I could email that are to do with the F1 that might be able to blag us something exciting... I guess teams and sponsors are worth a try, not really expecting anything but you never know! We've also managed to find a lovely apartment to stay in which is really close to the circuit - it was the result of hours scouring the internet as everything seemed to be booked, miles away, or very expensive so was chuffed to find what we did, and at about £70 per night for both of us.

I'm starting to get just as excited about the honeymoon as the wedding now! 2 amazing things to look forward to!

For us, special treatment was mostly a myth! We emailed both hotels and told them it was our HM. Only one gave us anything (free bottle of prosecco in the room which was lovely). WE did cheap flights so no chance of an upgrade as only one class on the plane, and we didn;t get anything else.

  • We were (and are, to an extent) planning to tour Scandinavia by rail. The £ is becoming so weak it might not be affordable anymore (and being Scandinavia it wasn't exactly cheap to begin with!!). We're thinking of different options at the moment, neither of us are into beach holidays but we like a mix of a culture and nice peaceful countryside. Some ideas include a few days in Paris and then some time in Provence, or staying in Scotland and doing a few nights in luxury hotels.

  • Hi there
We are going to Vietnam in Jan for our honeymoon and when we booked it through the travel agent they did put down for all our hotels that we were on honeymoon and as a result all our hotel rooms were upgraded...hopefully that will still be the case when we get there Who knows! When we fly we are also going to chance our arm and say that we are on honeymoon, as my mum used to say, 'nae cheek nae chance!'

Myth - mostly, especially long haul. We went to italy, and only got upgraded because they messed up the seating and sat us at opposite ends of the plane! Was nice though.

Doubt this will get you anything at all I'm afraid. My OH has a contract running the IT systems for one of the F1 teams and can't get anything out of them!!!

We did get a room upgrade and a bottle of prosecco in one of our hotel rooms.

    Good luck!

Congratulations - Australia is a fabulous place and Melbourne is just fantastic. If you don't ask then you don't get, so there is no harm to seeing what you can get. I doubt that you will get an upgrade on the plane though even if you are honeymooners although they may just give you some champagne - if you are flying Qantas ask them in advance because you just never know.

As for the F1 teams - I doubt that you will get anything out of them because they would rather spend money on their cars and drivers than anything else.

If you find a great travel agent then they should find some great deals for you.

We booked our honeymoon through Trailfinders, and I swear I've found my travel co-ordinator for life lol. He was great. I told him from the outset that I was looking for as many honeymoon freebies and upgrades that I could get. I have no shame and as such my travel coordinator loves it. He loves a challenge lol.

We were on the phone for 2 hours and got honeymoon upgrades at each hotel. Also, we managed 7 nights for the price of 5 at Disney and 5 nights for 3 in Miami.

Fingers crossed for the flights, but I know that the chances there are extremely thin.

Good luck. If you don't ask you don't get :D

    Hi MsChazzer,

We were very much like you for our honeymoon, neither of us like hot places or beach type holidays so we had a fortnight in scotland. We did 2 nights at the absoloutely fabulous Monachyle Mhor hotel near Callendar and I am desperate to go back there! We then went accross to Skye for a few days and had dinner at The three chimneys which was lovely. Then had a week self catering in the stables at Glengorm castle on the Isle of Mull. We went in April and had ok weather apart from 1 really really dreadful day on Mull. That was nice however as the apartment had a huge open fire and was above their lovely coffee shop selling gorgeous homemade soup etc. A spectacular location and a really lovely apartment.

  • Myth for us...

We got an upgrade but only because my dad knew someone.

We went to disney and had a balloon and signed card from cinderella which was sweet. And it seemed after the cleaners found out they made us towel animals everyday!

I just think honeymooners are quite common really. We saw loads while on our honeymoon (usually wearing a mini mouse ears with a veil).

//edit - Actually take the myth bit back a bit, we booked world traveller plus on our way out and they took the time to speak to us and when they found out we were on our honeymoon they brought us champagne! That was nice. It just depends who you get really and if they are having a bad day :)

Hi We booked our honeymoon with Trailfinders and they were fab. We went to Australia, with a stopover in Bangkok and Hong Kong. We didn't get upgraded on any flights, although we did ask at everyone! (8!!!!)
We did however get spoilt at all but one of our hotels, bottle of bubbly in everyone, upgraded room in each and fantastic treatment from the staff. We both felt thoroughly spoilt! Good luck with the GP stuff, i think they will be nice to you.
