First Time Buyers Advice

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I tried to do a search on the forum to see if my query had already been answered, unfortunately the search facility timed out on every occasion so apologies if my question is slightly obvious and preaching to the converted.

I have used Martin's advice in the past to reorganise my finances and this has proved very useful. I'm now embarking upon the next big step and that is dipping my toe into the mystical, magical waters of house buying. Myself and my girlfriend have made the decision to move away from the dead-end of renting and now aim to buy a house together. The only problem is that I know very little about the overall process....and she knows less. I've tried looking at Martin's Guides for Mortgages but there seemed little in the way of advice for first time buyers as it was mainly centred around re-mortgaging. I liked Martin's advice for savings as it was put into a language even numpties like me could understand and was wondering if there is anything similar produced for choosing the best mortgage, taking you through the process involved, what the potential pitfalls are, and, more importantly, how to avoid them, all in a nice user friendly, jargon busting speak.

If there are any out there please could you post the links to the articles so I can gain a better understanding.

Have a look on banks websites.

I got general info from them on what the main stages are.

Most banks have a guide or something similar on their website to help first timers through as they want your business.
