Cheapest Supermarket for basics?

Hi

A new Aldi has openned near me, I was so excited, even had plans of getting a walley trolly so i could pop down, exercise and save on petrol.BUT it seems expensive compared to ;odl and netto, even Morrisons. Eg needed frozen peas they had 1 sort which is ok but at £1.19 its not.

I know mysupermarket says Asda is cheapest for `branded` items but very rare I buy these.

I buy basics or supermarket own brand.

Any idea who is the cheapest on own/basic brands?

thanks

Honestly I really think its shopping around that does it.

I go everywhere, asdas, sains, tescos, morrissons and lidl, aldi, farmfoods etc

i generally find sains comes out the cheapest, although at times, sometimes asdas do. Sometimes ts does. Aldi/ lild I dont tihnk is cheap overly , but thier F&V deals are good.

Prices are fluctuating so fast at the mo, with the btter for 50p deals and whats on offer F&V wise, the only way is to browse them all.

ALso in different areas prices will fluctuate too, depending waht the locals will pay.

In a posh area of Kensington I found tescos to be only 1p more on many organic items and in some cases the organic option was cheaper than the own brand version. Moneysavers seem to be discrading the organic option in favour of value and the prices are now almost at match on some items.

Also the reduction cabinets seem to be much fuller than usual as people seem to be buying a lot less for Xmas. ( although they are busier with the swarms)

    Scan those shelves!

  • to be honest for the basics/value items there are pretty much all indetically priced.
sainsburys seems to have the biggest range of basics and better quality though.....asda and especially tesco have scaled back their ranges lately.

We only have a somerfield and Tescos locally. So that's my choice. I flit between the two depending whats on offer and where. If I see something on offer that's a low price (eg, milk at tescos) I pickup a couple of packs rather than just the usual one. However, I always check the other prices too on the shelf. As said sometimes the organic versions can be cheaper at the moment.

Our local supermarket is Aldi so I shop there a lot. Lately their prices on some things I tend to buy a lot of (milk, muesli, sausages) have gone up, quite a bit in some cases (ex. fruit and nut muesli was 99p but is now £1.50, sausages went up from 85p to £1). For the most part they aren't any cheaper than the value range elsewhere, although sometimes you get better stuff for the price.

I've also taken to shopping in the local green market and local butchers more than the supermarkets. I don't always get the cheapest possible stuff but the whole experience is much more pleasant and the produce is often a lot better.

I find that overall my local Netto is cheapest but maybe I could find certain offers - fruit for 50p etc - at Asda or Tesco. I go off the overall cost and quality that I'm getting. I can feed 5 of us 3 meals a day for a week for between 30 and 50 pounds at Netto. I struggle staying within budget at Tesco or Asda. There's too many tempting offers!

I thought that Aldi went quite expensive about a year ago my parents noticed it too.

I definately like Asda's SmartPrice range, cheapest and they aren't loaded up with loads of artificial additives like Tesco's own stuff.

I buy several items from Sainsburys, such as tinned toms, flour, noodles (these are good as a quick snack if you add other items, or just add them to soup), toilet rolls x 12 etc.

But I do look around and as an example, Somerfield have £0.50p bag of onions right now and lean mince meat at £1.75 for 400g. So I stock up...

The only reason I go to Aldi these days is to buy virgin olive oil - nearly 50% cheaper per litre than the big name supermarkets - otherwise you're exactly right. Unfortunately there's no Lidl or Netto within 30 min drive of me.

I'm quite rural though so I tend to go to 3 different towns to do grocery shopping and I also notice a difference in the same shops in different areas.

Avoid Tesco. Their cheap value range is nasty.
