Does anyone remember mangles/wringers? If so, can they still be bought today? Checked online but can only see US/Canada suppliers, think I would faint hearing the postage costs for a mangle:D

When I was a lad, in the sixties, we had a mangle in the garden which was used as a toy. It was relegated to the garden after my mum bought a washing machine with an electric wringer built in.
My sister, who is 3 years older than me remembers helping mum turn it to mangle the washing, but I can only ever remember it being "thrown out" into the garden.
Anyway, back to the point, I bet if you search for "mangle" on ebay you find more than one. May need some restoration tho.0 -
other than what geordie joe says, try junk shops
I remember them well, got a couple of flat fingers to prove it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Mangles with large wooden rollers go for a fortune on ebay. Wringers with smaller rubber coated rollers, sometimes called Acme wringers, will have come to the end of their useful life decades ago as the rubber perishes..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

When I was a girl I helped my grandma with the washing, putting the sheets through the mangle for her. Eventually she got a little spin dryer, but still maintained the use of her 'copper' and never had a washing machine.
My other nan used to hand wash some things and then use the laundrette. She had a small spin dryer at home as well.
If push comes to shove, a salad spinner makes quite a good spin dryer if you only have small items to spin ! LOL!"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Thanks for your replies. Yeah, it was the Acme wringer I remember. Loved helping my Aunt when I was small. Just thought it would be nice to have one when I was washing quilts etc, the spin on my washing machine never seems to get enough of the water out0

While hunting through some American 'thrift' blogs I came across a [STRIKE]crazy[STRIKE]very OS lady blogger who lives 'off grid', washes by hand and and uses a mop bucket wringer instead of a spin dryer  while she is saving up for a mangle... too small for a quilt though.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0

Many "hand" car wash places use mangles for the chamois leathers. As to where they got them, no idea!

Yes I do, I had one, both Hoover and Hotpoint made one, the Hotpoint was the Countess....
We used an acme wringer at home when I was a girl, it was kept in the shed, so all the washing had to be carried out to be mangled and then hung on the line to dry.
We had a brick built copper in the kitchen, the fire was lit in it on a monday morning to do the washing.....later it was taken out and an eziot boiler fixed to the wall over the kitchen sink, it was only ever used to do the laundry. We boiled a kettle on the gas to wash up.Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
