Portable video player

I got a portable dvd player from Sainsburys at Christmas for kids to watch dvd's listen to music whilst having the flexability of being on the move.
We only just used it twice, once Christmas day for my two kids didnt quiet manage to watch a whole dvd before battery ran out and today in car taking my eldest to hospital. I only charged the DVD the day before it takes around 6 hours. 40 minutes in the journey which would take about 90 mnutes and battery ran out, not like what the instructions said 3 hours play time.
Any way if this is the best it can do, not much cop if you cant even watch a 90 min movie. It helps calm my daughter who just had a MMR scan so keeps her busy and not have to worry. Well it didnt work the full journey and because she was nervous she was ill on the way due to nerves.
So the crunch is I need another portable player, this one cost me £80 with car kit but tbh its a pain as the cord isnt quiet long enough and I really dont want to drain the car battery too much as I dont use the car a lot.
So I need a portable player that doesnt cost too much I go to £150 but it would be nice if its a reasonable screen and plays divX and music too.
Are those hard drive players any good? or what about the PSP can that play your own movies?
Any help would be apprepiated.
