Old debt - how to deal with it?

Hi, I'm trying to sort out my finances and hopefully someone can give me some advice.

I am aware that my credit rating is poor and even before the credit crunch, I was unlikely to be successful in any applications for credit.

I think I know the main reason for this, although I'm unable to find any information on my credit file.

I had a huge amount of rent arrears and know that I ended up with the council getting a CCJ. I won't go into the details but basically I was having a pretty rough time and following this going to court, I moved house anyway.

What I want to know is whether this debt is still showing as unpaid and where I can find this information. Since they haven't come 'looking for me', I'm unsure where I stand.

I know that when I apply for credit, I'm required to give my previous addresses, which includes the one the CCJ is attached to. I've had a look at my credit report but it says nothing on there about this debt, only the bank loan and credit card I have.

I've not missed any payments on these, I turned over a new leaf when I was in trouble with my rent and have kept everything running smoothly so I'm guessing this is whats following me around.

What I'd like to know is what does this CCJ restrict me to? Opening bank accounts? Opening new credit cards? Because since then, I've done both of these without any problem.

I am planning to contact my debtors and arrange some kind of payments to them as I want it to be cleared but need advice first. This debt/CCJ was from 2006.

Thanks.

Also godd luck with makeing a payment plan with the companys that you owe money too. All should agree to what you offer. but you really need to make sure that you stick to the plan as thay can get a bit nasty if you make one and then break it. some will only make one once. others may give you two chances if you are lucky.

Anyaway again welcome and goos luck dont for get to keep us updated on how you get on.

  • Thanks, been trying to find out info online.

Does anyone know which part of the CreditExpert report these things should show up on?

Is it the Gone Away bit (GAIN) at the bottom?
