Bouncing Cheques

What can you do if someone gives you a cheque and it bounces? I've tried calling them but they won't answer and when i go round to their house they never seem to be there. It's only for about £20 so it's not really a big deal but it's just the principle. I don't like being conned.
The cheque was for food so i couldn't really wait for it to clear before giving them the food. We usually get a bounced cheque every 6 months so it isn't a great problem and it is for low amounts but what i don't understand is why they do it. Don't they get charged £35 for a bounced cheque anyways?

They don't care. The cheque may even be stolen. Didn't you make sure there was a guarantee card, and put the number on the back of the cheque? Lots of shops have stopped taking cheques these days, and I don't blame them. I had a cheque bounce on me last month, and to rub salt into the wound I got charged £3 by my bank for the privilege!I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

there was a number on the back but apparently it's not the cheque guarantee number. So if you got charged £3, do the bank charge both parties or just the person unfortunate enough to receive the bad cheque?0

No, you have to get the number and expiration date from their cheque guarantee card and write it on the cheque yourself; it is never completed in advance!0 -
I had to pay £3.00. The person who bounced the cheque on me would have had to pay a great deal more than that, quite rightly imho.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

Wait a few days, then pay the cheque in again
Maybe try and do it around their pay day0 -
What is written on the top of the cheque?
If it is Refer to Drawer I'm afraid you have lost your money.0 -

Yeah that's what it says. What i plan to do is deposit that cheque again, if the bank let me and also harass the person that gave the cheque for a while and then give up.0
