  • They have no power at all, and it is illegal to talk about your debt to anyone other than you!
So you don't have to let them in and they cannot call without an appt. Which is why they sent you a card..don't make one, just send the letter back and tell them you are going on a debt management plan..

As someone else said, they have the same legal powers as the paperboy.

Was the calling card addressed directly to you? Have you received threatening letters from Wescot?
  • I had the "pleasure" of a doorstep collector a while back. I'm female and live on my own and soon saw them off! You don't have to answer the door to them and if you do, leave them standing outside in the pouring rain for 20 mins like I did whilst I had my tea...well, they called at an inconvenient time!

They have no legal power so tell them to sling their hook (or words to that effect!) or you'll call the police.

  • Hi,
I wish we had done as you suggest! My other half has a debt with a mobile phone company, they passed the debt onto Moorcroft (who I have dealt with before for one of my debts but only over the phone ).
Moorcroft sent a debt collector round, he's been round three times now, my other half agreed to make weekly payments (IN CASH!!! Collector (whose name is Kev) said they could not accept any other payment method and it HAD to be collected as the door. My OH works but I dont have a job at the mo so am here most of the time, he came round today when I didnt expect him to so wasnt in. He rang the home phone and left three messages on the answer phone within the space of 10 minutes.
I called him back when I got home cos hes quite a scary guy and he said "I don't want things to have to get nasty". Am I supposed to take that as a threat?
He's been round and phoned before 7am in the past.
What can I do? I would rather we paid by standing order or direct debit, or even with a card over the phone than have him round.
Is there any way I dont have to answer the door to him? Is it true that they have no powers like bailiffs?
    Please HELP!!

  • we do want to clear the debt, and it isnt even a lot, only £130, its just we cant give what we havent got.
  • When the "di** head"....sorry, meant meathead turned up at my door, he had left messages on my phone but as I was at work during the day, he took it upon himself to just turn up in the evening.

I am on a dmp and this particular "meat head" company had refused to accept the payment proposals. Well, tough, that's all they were getting.

I just rested in the knowledge that it cost them money to send to wally out to me for absolutely nothing as a week later they accepted my dmp and I've not heard from them since (May!).

  • And no, they don't have any legal powers (although they spout all sorts of stuff at you! I just spouted stuff back!), so don't worry and don't let them in.

  • dont mean to scare you but i had doortstep collector from mercers round couple of weeks ago and as soon as i answered the door i said "were with cccs now and you ll be getting paymments from them so i cant speak about it" a quick phone call to his office and he left very unhappy that he'd travelled quite far for no reason.should have been on his notes about cccs!i was so scared about someone coming round too but after reading all the advice on this forum was actually suprised how strong and calm i was with him as i knew all the facts and that they had NO rights at all.you dont even have to answer the door but i would to say get lost otherwise theyll just keep coming.i was polite to mine and the case was passed straight back to barclaycard
