If you want a number for North Yorkshire the number I have is 0845 389 1671. Fax number is 01723 586 817.

This is a General Enquiries number and they will re-direct you to the admin team who deals with your mortgage account. You will have push hard and they may try to fob you off with a Senior Adviser rather than transfer you to the Complaints Team.

Also be warned, when I wrote a letter of complaint to the Complaints Dept it took them over a month just to reply to me. They kept writing to me saying they needed more time to consider my case, so it will get very frustraing for you. As I said before you are NOT dealing with your lender only call centre people who don't know and can't decide anything.

BTW I've just checked and this is the same number as I have on my Topaz Finance letters, now a foot high since I have been dealing with them....and I'm not kidding!

So as you can see they are all being looked after by the same administration company I mentioned in my previous post, Scarborough Mortgage Services.

The number I've called for North Yorks is 0845 130 4145.

I've only ever spoken to the person(s) who pick up the phone, and I think they work in some sort of customer service team.... although the quality of service they're providing could certainly do with some improving!

    Hi Guys

    Another quick update:

I spoke to North Yorks again today, and it turns out they did have 2 offers available for GMAC customers. However, following the base rate decrease yesterday, these offers have been withdrawn.

Apparently they are expecting new offers to be released, but they don't know when this will be.

If you want to find out what's happening, call the number I quoted above, but just make sure you ask to speak to a mortgage advisor. You do NOT want to speak to the customer service person who answers the phone - they are not aware of any deals, and will tell you they no offers exist/ have ever existed.

Just wanted to let you all know and I'll keep you posted as and when I hear any more news.
  • Have been sold by GMAC and on N Yorks SVR since Jan 2008. I wrote at length to complain, they said they are right and if I dont like it I can remortgage with someone else. If enough people complain to FSA they should take notice. My friend (with Scarborough) has been written to that Skipton are taking over but I heard nothing.
  • I just phoned North Yorkshire Mortgages, they confirm their SVR is 5.99%. Skipton Building Society is merging with them but they will act separately and still charge their own rate. I already compained officially so am taking the complaint forward to the Financial Services Authority.

I've just spent half an hour typing a post for this but lost it! Never mind here we go again.

Firstly the SVR for North Yorks is now going to be 5.75% wef 31 March.

North Yorks have now been taken over by Skipton as part of the Scarborough group although they will remain a seperate entity, so unfortunately we're all still dealing with North Yorks.

My original contact has now moved on and if you have a query moving forward the person to speak to is someone called Mark Davies. Don't speak to anyone else has most haven't a clue whats going on. The first people I spoke to denied the existence of any rates even though I had an offer sitting in front of me!!

Regarding their rates be very careful if you get offered anything. I was offered a 2 year fixed rate, what they didn't tell me was that at the end I go onto a 4% above BOE Tracker!! If the rates go up you would be stuffed. They should have warned me about that before sending the offer so I'm less than happy about it, particularly as it was not clear in the quote they sent me.

My advice for anyone at the moment is to sit tight and see what Skipton offer, if anything.

If you want to complain the process is as follows:

First write to North Yorks and GMAC. You could phone and they should respond but most likely they won't. They will usually respond within 5 days. After this they will usually produce a final response letter within 8 weeks.

If they are still fobbing you off (most likely) you then have 6 months to take it to the Ombudsman.

When you make the complaint get as much evidence together as you can. The Ombudsman will take no notice if you just complain about the SVR as their take on it is that lenders have the right to set it at whatever rate they want. It may be more beneficial to complain about the unfair terms and conditions that GMAC set, and that they have not made them clear in their mortgage offer.

If anyone wants any addresses or contacts or pointers let me know and I'll give you whatever info you want.

BTW - if you dont want to pay the 0845 rate you can always try 0113 288 5980 or 0113 288 5986
