Identity Theft Victim

Hi all, I was not quite sure where to post this thread.
Anyway I have just discovered by accident (and a debt collector!!!) that someone has been using my identity to buy goods etc.
I have just looked at the guide on Credit Ratings and will go follow that to get my rating to see the extent of the theft.
What else should I do ? any advice please would be very helpful.
Thanks all.

    Hi
Have you informed the police? Not sure they will do much but I was told to do it when I was the subject of ID theft, just to get a crime ref no. to quote to the DCA's so etc. Never heard from the police after I got the ref no and the companies stopped calling me and that was 3 years ago, so it might be worth a try. After all, it is fraud.

    Good luck.

    Hi

Start by checking your credit files, http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/credit-rating-credit-score#your then come back for more help.

Also check whether anyone else is still listed on the electoral roll.

One the other hand it is not uncommon for DCAs to send out debt letters to everyone with the same name and then if you contact them to ay it is not your debt, to suggest that the only way this debt could have been taken out was identity fraud, Actually it was never your debt in the first place but they would not mind if you paid it. The aim is to pressure you into continued contact and to pay some or all of it in the end.

    Have you moved recently?

    Hi thanks for the replies.

Yes, I informed the police but they didn't give me a crime reference number.

I moved 3 years ago and the 'theft' is from people using my old address.

I must have been on the phone 4 times to KAYS catalogue where the goods the goods were bought and they said that they would inform the debt agency straight away and tell them to stop the procedure on Wednesday.
Of course they did not phone back and I have just phoned the debt agency and as far as they are concerned I still owe them the debt.

Of course as you say they just want someone to pay and couldn't care less who it is.

Well, will carry on with geting the credit checks now.

Get all bank and cc statements together for a start, account statements from Kays, proof that haven't lived at your previous address for however long, proof of your new address. In fact the more info the better.

You should then be able to prove to the police that a crime has been committed, that should help a crime ref no.
