Cheap Car Hire

Can anyone suggest any car hire companies that I could try. I have never hired a car and points to bear in mind.

Discounted car hire would be a bonus. Looking to hire it from Shannon airport, Ireland for a period of a week commencing 18th February. A small car would be fine as there is only me, my misus and a teenage son.

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

    As for tips:

Check the car thoroughly before you sign for it look for any scratches, dents, chips, dodgy tyres - as if you were going to buy it! - Otherwise kiss your deposit good bye.

Makes sure you know who is insured to drive it, and that you know where and when you have to return it, and what petrol you are being charged for and mileage limits.

    Hope that helps.

Personally I use Holiday Autos, but other people on this site have made other recommendationsa such as Avis with a discount code.

  • the car hire companies make a fortune charging you to take out insurance exxess waiver cover. Effectively, if there is any damage at the end of your rental, regardless of it being your fault or not, you have to pay the first couple of hundred quid - can be as little as £100, or as much as £800.

It can be worth it to get this insurance as a damaged wing mirror will cost over £100. Holiday autos can be quite competitive for the main rental cost, and should only charge you about £2.50 per day to remove the damage excess - so if you have an accident you will pay nothing. Most car rental companies will charge you about £8 per day or more.

The only thing to remember about using holiday autos is that the car hire company will charge you the excess fee, and then you must claim it back via holiday autos - a small chance, and it is cheaper this way so probably worth it.
