Spicy stock cube substitute

I have a recipe for spicy rice that uses oxo spicy stock cubes. Was wondering if anyone has suggestions for what to do instead. If I remember to take my glasses to the shops I could look at the ingredients list, but I suspect that it will be general and say 'spices'.

It might be referring to Indian Stock Cubes; I haven't seen them for while.

Discontinued by Oxo: You can either look at the ingredients and use what you think is the right amount of each, or just adapt the recipe and use your own seasonings.

Indian would be things like chilli, coriander, cumin, tumeric and garam masal etc.

Oxo Indian Herb & Spice: Making a curry could not be easier using OXO Indian seasoning cubes with a perfect mixture of spices including coriander, turmeric, allspice, ginger, fenugreek, garlic and cumin. It’s so much easier to add cubes than storing and measuring all these spices individually. With Indian cubes a dish can be as mild or as spicy as you wish according to how many are used in meat, fish and vegetable dishes. For curry fanatics, extra fresh chillies can be added for hot, hot curries!

Why not use a mixture of individual spices such as turmeric, coriander, cumin, mustard seed, ginger etc. I'm sure it will be much nicer than MSG laden stock cubes..... if it's a simple recipe like spicy rice you can't really go wrong!

Fry the spices in a little oil along with some chopped onion, garlic & seasonings, along with the other ingredients, add the rice & stir, then add the water and cook as per directed:D

Try (World Foods) Indonesian Fried Rice "Nasi Goreng" Paste.
Tesco sell it I'm sure other supermarkets will do, or try the Indian Stores.

That's exactly what I'd do. I might be inclined to cook the rice in chicken stock as well.

I have all the spices needed, so will try and experiment on amounts.

Hi, I just saw these cubes are back in the supermarket and was wondering if they are any good? I usually make my curries using a curry base sauce but the recipe on the oxo cube box looks very simple...

I'd use a standard vegetable OXO cube and a little bit of my usual "curry powder" mix of 1 teaspoon of chilli powder, 1 tablespoon of garam masala & ½ a teaspoon of ground turmeric.
