    Hi Sally,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations.

We looked for a while and eventually went with Michael Rich http://www.richphotos.com/index2b.php

Reasonably priced, you get all your photos on DVD to print yourself and to top it all off, he was lovely. We've gone for the £850 package which covers from me getting ready till we sit down for the dinner but you can have longer and pay more. He also does fantastic albums which obviously add greatly to the cost. You can order those at any point after the wedding tho. We also get a pre-wedding shoot as well which is nice.

Obviously we haven't had the wedding yet, but looking at his work, we would highly reccommend him.

Oh and he was 3 times master photographer of the year too :D

We're not tying the knot until next year, but our photographer is Bristol-based.

  • I know I've said this before but sometimes you CANT print from a DVD. Usually the DVD is just a slideshow of your photos - I got on with my wedding package. You need to check this out and not assume that you can print from a DVD.

If you want to print your own you need a CD/DVD with the hi-resolution images (photographers usually shrink images for webviewing or creating DVD slideshows and these are no suitable for printing) and the photographer must also give you written permission to use them.

Update: just checked richphotos and he definately does offer the images ready for printing but you need to check with each photographer.

It all works out good in the end.
If it's not good, it's not the end!

Do watch out for who owns the pictures. It's common for commercial photographers not to assign copyright to you and even though you're paying them for their work, that will not automatically transfer the copyright to you. And with no copyright, you can't go and put the images up online for friends to print or make as many copies as you like wherever and whenever you want. Instead you're likely to be limited to expensive future charges by the photographer or the limitation that karen_newcastle mentioned, having to ask the photographer for permission whenever you want to use them.

The Michael Rich site seems to claim that you get copyright with the DVD package, since it's impossible to do what the site describes without it: "You can then do whatever you wish with your pictures - make up your own prints and albums, framed pictures, emails, internet etc". "whatever you wish" and "etc" are just impossible without owning the copyright. But it's still worth verifying this in case the site is misleading.

Ours are definately copyright free and full sized printable images on disk too, it's written in the contract.

The main thing is that you get the full size high resolution image files and permission to do whatever you want with them. The photographer may wish to retain copyright but provide a 'usage license' to do everything you might reasonably want to do with them ie put them online, get prints made, photobooks etc.

Generally the photographers who charge a few hundred pounds will be more likely to give you the high resolution jpegs whereas the more expensive photogs may give you a disk with low-res images only so they can sell you a wedding album with a sizable mark up on what they actually cost.
