I work for a local police force as a civilian employee - i am currently on suspension pending an allegation that has been made against me. I was assured by senoir management that my work collegues would not find out about this unless it came from me. Within days of my suspension a blanket email was sent to collegues stating my name and that i was on suspension pending investigation. No email has ever been sent like this before - have they breached my data protection/rights?

Do you belong to some form of union? If you do, you should get some advice regarding your suspension but in addition to your comments above I think this may be covered by some form of data protection (but can't be sure) If you don't belong to a union try contacting ACAS or CAB for some advice.
Incidently, how do you know about the blanket email and have you got a copy that you can forward to your union or similar?0 -
I do have copy of email , as soon as email was sent out work collegues called me saying "whats happened?" dont belong to union -but will contact ACAS for advice - thanks0

I think you probably have grounds for some sort of recourse against your employer as at the moment you state you have been suspended pending an allegation - the way I see it, the allegation has not been proved as yet and therefore this is causing a slur against your character. Have you contacted your employer at all and asked for their comments? How do they intend to deal with this in the event of you being cleared of the allegation made against you. Have you been given information about the timescale of the investigation etc? Are you being paid whilst suspended?0

Sorry I don't think you have any grounds to feel harshly done to, UNLESS the email went into detail.
The rest of the company would need to know a member of staff is not there to start to plan who covers your work. I would expect your line manager to sort this out.
If the email said "X has been accused of blah blah etc" then that can't happen as you are still under investigation.
However merely stating you are off pending an investigation is fine.

Due to the type pf working environment - no one would have to cover my work - this would of been allocated via duties. The company have apologised for the email and dont know why it was sent. Person at work can be off with chicken pox and collegues are not allowed to know due to data protection.0

OP you have my sympathy, and quite seriously wonder if you work for the same force as I do. I've never worked for an employer who treats their (civilian) staff so shoddily0

My force tend to treat employees worse than the criminals ! Cant do right for doing wrong !0
-
We DO work for the same force!
Guilty until proven innocent and even then you're still guilty!0
