Missed loan payment?

Hello, A quick questions please?
I changed the direct debit account on a loan I had with HBOS in October, I was told to make Octobers payment via debit card and then the new account would be active from November.
However it was not. Subsequently the November payment was missed, today they have called me saying I owe the original payment of £270 plus £45 charges & interest, I argued that it was not my fault it was missed, the funds were available, they had the correct details they just did not request the direct debit over 2 months from being informed.
I paid the £270 by debit card with another promise that the direct debit will be in place for December payment however they have said they still require the £45 charge.
Is this legal?
How difficult is it to get them to see past the “monkey script” and realise that it’s a mistake or at least mis-information on their part?
I think I am just going to pay the £270 monthly as normal and ignore the charge hoping they will realise its pretty useless to push it, is this a bad idea?
Help much appreciated!

    It's a bad idea.

Don't ignore the charge or they will add more interest and charges on to it. I'm not saying you should pay it but if you were informed that the DD would be set up and it wasn't then they should be looking into what has happened. I would phone them again and ask that the charge be dropped as the error was at their end - if they refuse, ask to be sent a copy of the official complaint procedure and go through the official channels.
