Made Token Payments By Debit Card !
NotToClever
I have just made two token payments by debit card and now have a sinking feeling that the creditors may take out more than the £5 I authorised. The creditors are A&L and Halifax.
The current account isn't with either of these two banks/groups.
Have I made a real blunder and will they pilfer my current account ?
I will be paying by Postal Order from now on !!!
Thank you in advance

Hi, i make £1 monthly payments by the 'pay a bill/standing' order facility with my online bank.
Both these payments are £1 each to Barclays MasterCard and Visa.
They havn't and can't take any more from me!
With my other creditors........ I Do send them £1 Postal Orders.............BUT be advised, a £1 postal order actually cost £1.50 to buy!! Plus theres the stamp to get as well!
Oh by the way..........Barclaycard never did agree to £1 monthly payments............but niether have they ever sent them back.....so i guess they're accepting them!!0 -
Because I have given them the details rather than being in control of it myself through on line banking I am concerned that they could take more than I authorised. They have my current account debit card details and last 3 digits of the security code.0

Oh i see.
I honestly don't know if they could take more..........hopefully someone might be able to tell you.
But how about for your own peace of mind, ringing up your bank and saying you've lost your debit card.......then they'll send you a new one.........and it'll have a different number on it?
Its a inconvenience i know........waiting for it to arrive........then having to change everything else that has the old cards number recorded.0 -
Iv often paid these "minimum amounts" to different creditors and never once (touch wood) had more money taken out than i have authorised. I dont think they are allowed to once you have agreed an amount with them previously, ie £1.Thinking it over...:o0

Hi, sorry for crashing this thread (hope its ok), i just wanted to ask a question. I see that you are paying token payments to credit cards, i have been told to do the same and write to them to let them know, I really don''t know how to word the letter, could you advise me on what to write??
Many thanks in advance

AFAIK they cannot take any more than the payment you have made, as technically it is a debit card 'purchase' that you have made... if you had set up a Direct Debit, then potentially they can take more, as DD amounts can vary from month to month. I would either continue to use your debit card, or as posted above, set up a standing order from your bank (these cannot be altered without your authorisation)

I understand your concerns. If it helps, in the past I have made tiny payments (a pound or so) to DCA's even when they haven't been happy with the amount and they still have taken purely what I authorised them too. I tend to do things via cheque or s/o now.

Thanks Sarah,
Put my mind at rest, although as you and others have said I think S.O. is the better way to go for future payments.0
