JSA Contribution Based Running Out

I recently left work in april on vol redundancy, claimed jsa until I got a job in october and was utterly miserable in the job due to not being able to socialise with other work colleagues so I left in november after a month. I left on good terms with my boss and was paid for the two weeks of november. I tried to not claim for a few weeks until last week and put my reasons of why I did not claim and why I left the job.
Had a letter today to say I can claim from 13 Nov and will be paid the £60.50 a week.
Unfortunately they say they cannot pay me from 6 January because my entitlement on class 1 nat insurance contributions has run out.
How can that be after 22 years of continuous employment and contribitutions since 19th May 1986 till 30th April 2008. I don't get it?
I don't like claiming as I have always worked hard, and still applying and looking for jobs every day.
