Debt collector threats

I worked as a party organiser for a particular company for 18 months but left about a year ago. I had to send my tings back to them to clear my account, which I did. As it was so long ago, all my paperwork was shredded and binned appropriately (customer orders, car info etc).

Yesterday I get home to a letter from a local debt collection agency saying that I owe the company I worked for £56 and that I have 7 days to pay (conveniently letter dated 2 weeks ago!) with threats and telling me I have ignored previous account reminders!
This is the first I have heard of it so I emailed Head Office asking them what it is about and that I am not at all happy with being threatened like this. No reply today, so have sent another message telling them to contact me urgently.
I phoned the debt people saying no way am I handing money over for something I know nothing about, so the guy claims he has put it on hold until Fri but that is the latest he can do it.

Where on earth do I stand?? I am assuming this is going to now be on my credit record??
